Harris County Forensic Genetics Laboratory

Johnston provided full architectural and engineering services.

Harris County selected Johnston to be the lead designer of the Forensic Genetics Laboratory for the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The laboratory occupies a 15,100 SF lease space in the Texas Medical Center’s McGovern Campus, previously a train bay. The facility’s primary function is the analysis of DNA evidence used in Harris County criminal court cases. It is divided into two separate and distinct areas: administrative and non-laboratory based activities, and laboratory and laboratory based activities. Each area is then subdivided into specialized activity zones based on specific workflows.

The building received a Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Construction from the Texas Building Branch of the Associated General Contractors, and is a featured tour at the 2016 Laboratory Design Conference.
